Disturbing Trend: 10 Schoolgirls Defiled in One Week

In the past week, police reports reveal that at least 10 girls were defiled across various counties in Kenya. Shockingly, two of these girls were defiled by their fathers while one was defiled by her grandfather. This alarming trend has raised fears that defilement within families is increasing drastically.

In Kyuso, Kitui county, a minor was defiled by her father in their home. The girl’s teacher noticed that she was having difficulty walking and when asked what had happened, she revealed that she was defiled by her father on March 9th.

Police officers visited the scene and the victim was taken to Kyuso Sub-County Hospital for a medical check-up which confirmed that she had been defiled.

Another case was reported in Ng’onyi, Meru county, where a seven-year-old girl was defiled by her grandfather. The victim’s mother found her father-in-law holding her child inside the family kitchen while half-naked.

She raised an alarm and the suspect threatened to kill her before escaping. The child later revealed that it was the third time her grandfather had defiled her. She was taken to Nairobi Women’s Hospital for treatment, but the suspect is yet to be arrested.

In Ivonda village, Kakamega county, a 16-year-old girl was defiled by two men who waylaid her while she was on a boda boda.

The suspects were armed with pangas and cut the rider’s neck before defiling the girl and fleeing the scene. Both victims were rescued and taken to Iguhu Sub-County Hospital for treatment.

Other defilement cases were reported in Nairobi, Kiambu, and Nakuru counties, and police are currently investigating these incidents. Police note that most cases of defilement go unreported, making it difficult to get accurate figures.

Children’s naivety makes them more vulnerable to perpetrators, further exacerbating the situation.

The Sexual Offences Act stipulates that a person who commits an offence of defilement with a child aged 11 years or younger shall be sentenced to life imprisonment upon conviction.

If the victim is between 12 and 15 years old, the accused is liable to imprisonment for a term not less than 20 years.

It is crucial that these cases are reported and the perpetrators are brought to justice to ensure that the trend of defilement within families and the community is halted.
