The county government intends to decrease the payroll bill by laying off employees.

Andrew Mwadime, the governor of Taita Taveta, stated that the bloated, unsustainable workforce has affected service delivery.

Similarly, the governor announced that expired contracts will not be renewed.

Mwadime reneged on his promise to grant permanent, pensionable jobs to all Early Childhood Development Education and vocational training teachers whose three-year contracts expire this year.

“We are interrogating the audit of the staff forwarded to us and at the same time looking at how we can address challenges around the huge wage bill,” he said.

“The corrupt who used fake academic certificates to secure jobs and those undermining my administration will face the impending purge. The Revenue department will be the most affected.”

The Governor also attributed part of his administration’s troubles to the federal government’s delayed revenue distribution.

"The situation has been compounded by low local revenue, which has been occasioned by corruption among revenue collectors who use fake receipt books to enrich themselves,” he said.

According to reports from the Department of Education, 332 ECDE teachers hold permanent, pensionable positions.

Contracts for 347 are up for renewal.

76 of the 203 teachers in vocational training colleges have expired contracts.
