Continuing Students Not Affected by New University Funding Model, KUCCPS Confirms.

The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has clarified that continuing students across universities will not be affected by the new university funding model, which was launched by President William Ruto on May 3.

The agency confirmed that government-sponsored students already placed in private universities will continue to enjoy government support.

This comes after concerns among students, mostly attending private universities, who wondered whether they would be able to proceed with their studies.

The new funding model will see public universities as the only beneficiaries of government funding, with an increase in funding from Ksh54 billion to Ksh84.6 billion.

President Ruto also announced that vulnerable students will be fully sponsored by the government, with their parents contributing nothing. The funding will be through government scholarships and loans.

Less needy students are set to receive government scholarships of 38% and 55% in the form of student loans.

The announcement of the new funding model had caused confusion among students who were already placed in private universities through KUCCPS.

No Government Funding for Technical and Vocational Courses in Universities — KUCCPS

Robert Ahmed, a government-sponsored student placed at Mt Kenya University, had questioned whether the government would continue to sponsor him. However, KUCCPS responded to these concerns by clarifying that continuing students will not be affected by the new funding model.

Despite this clarification, the university placement agency reiterated that it was yet to open the application portal for 2022 KCSE candidates. It is unclear how the new funding model will impact new applicants.

The government’s move to overhaul the university funding model has been met with mixed reactions.

While vulnerable students are set to benefit from the government’s full sponsorship, less needy students will have to rely on student loans to fund their education. Critics argue that this will burden students with debt, which could hinder their ability to secure jobs and contribute to the economy.

However, supporters of the new funding model argue that it will increase access to higher education for vulnerable students who may not have been able to afford it otherwise.

The government’s increased funding to public universities is also expected to improve the quality of education and research, which could have long-term benefits for the country.

Overall, the impact of the new university funding model remains to be seen. While continuing students have been assured that they will not be affected, it is unclear how new applicants will be impacted.

The government’s focus on vulnerable students is a step in the right direction, but it remains to be seen whether the new funding model will achieve its intended goals.
