The rise in exam malpractices in schools necessitated more stringent measures to prevent cheating during national exams.
However, things have changed since the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum.
Police officers with guns and around two invigilators in exam rooms will soon be a thing of the past.
In contrast to 8-4-4, assessment in the Competency-Based Curriculum is primarily teacher-student based.
According to Kenya National Examinations Council CEO David Njeng’ere, control of exam rooms is primarily part of the 8-4-4 requirement.
Njeng’ere stated that this was done to discourage cheating and other exam malpractices.
“You must create an environment where the child is not being intimidated by the exam environment. Going forward we will find a solution as we continue to implement CBC,” he said.
According to the CEO, the council is working to foster a culture of self-discipline among students.
“What is happening is Grades 4, 5, and 6 are sitting the assessment and there’s nobody who goes to that school in the name of a police officer or an invigilator,” he said.
The exam process was overseen by police officers and several invigilators in the previous education system.
A number of lawmakers expressed concern, claiming that the constant guarding of exam rooms is intimidating to students.
In the ongoing assessment this month, students in Grades 3, 4, and 5 were subjected to a very friendly environment. An exam room contained only students and one subject teacher.
According to Zadock Ogutu, MP for Bomachoge Borabu, a number of students feel threatened due to the heavy police presence.

“Let us allow them the environment they require for exams and if there are issues let us deal with them in a more professional way,” he said.
Ogutu went on to say that not only does this subject students to psychological torment, but it also reduces their productivity.
The main issue with mobile phones according to Zadock is that people do all kinds of mischief that can easily be misunderstood and affect our students’ performance.
This year will include four terms, two KCPE exams, two KCSE exams, and a KCPE-equivalent assessment for the CBC pioneer class.

The first set of tests will include the KCPE and KCSE exams for the 2021 class, which will be administered between March and April 2022.
The class of 2022 will receive their second set of exams in December.
The final exam will be for the pioneer CBC class, which will complete Grade 6.
According to the revised academic calendar released in 2019, the 2021 KCPE exams will be held between March 7 and March 10.
The KCSE will be held between March 11 and April 1.
