Pemwai Girls Closed After Student Dies In School.
Students at Pemwai Girls High School have been sent home following the school’s indefinite closure due to student unrest. Following the mysterious death of one of their own, the students staged protests.
The young girl, a form two student, died on Sunday, February 13, prompting her classmates to walk over five kilometres at night to a nearby center to protest her death, which they claimed was the result of negligence.
According to NTV, the student complained of chest pains, but the administration refused to allow her to seek medical attention.
Following the students’ protests, the school administration authorized an indefinite closure while the situation is being resolved.
The students were joined by a group of parents who chastised the school administration for ignoring the deceased even after he showed signs of illness.
The students described how the deceased, Faith Karonei, nose bled all night after the administration refused to allow her to seek medical attention.
They claimed that the school had been turning a dead ear on them whenever they sought help, Karonei’s death calling them out of their comfort.
“Someone can be sick for one month and nothing is done about it. We are mourning our dear sister,” said one of the students.
The investigation into the incident has begun.
