Body of Missing 15-Year-Old Student Found Mutilated in Mombasa
On Good Friday, just after 1pm, a group of friends went to Ibrahim Katana’s home in Mikindani, Mombasa County, looking for the 15-year-old boy. They wanted to invite him to play with them.
Little did they know that it would be the last time Ibrahim’s mother, Ms Sabu Lewa, would see her son alive. According to Ms Lewa, Ibrahim left home with his friends, who had puppies with them. However, he never returned home that day, which was unusual for him as he never stayed out late.
When he didn’t come back, Ms Lewa grew worried and suspected that something was wrong. She searched for him for two consecutive days, but with no success.
Ms Lewa asked her neighbors about Ibrahim’s whereabouts, and they mentioned seeing him with two other boys his age heading towards Mikindani Beach. She reported the matter to the village elder, who advised her to speak to the Imam of a nearby mosque.
The Imam made announcements about Ibrahim’s disappearance after every prayer session. On Sunday, a police officer called the Imam to inform him that two bodies had been found and taken to the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital (CPGH) mortuary.
One of the bodies matched the description of Ibrahim’s clothing when he left home two days earlier. Ms Lewa went to Mikindani Police Station, and the officers directed her to the CPGH morgue. There, she was shocked to discover that her son was the one the police had retrieved from Mikindani beach.
Ibrahim’s body had its hands tied with a rope, and there were no eyes. His neck also had deep cuts. “When Katana left home, he had shorts on but when we viewed the body, he only had his underwear and no shoes,” said Ms Lewa.
A post-mortem was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon to determine the cause of death. Ms Lewa expressed her suspicion that Ibrahim did not drown, based on the visible injuries on his body, and she urged the police to investigate the matter further.
She is eagerly awaiting the results of the autopsy, which she hopes will reveal the true cause of her son’s death. The police in Mikindani stated that investigations are ongoing, but no further details were provided.
The tragic death of Ibrahim Katana has left his family and community in shock, and they are seeking answers and justice for the senseless loss of a young life.
