Another Mukumu Girls Student Dies in Suspected Infection
The death of a student at Kakamega’s Mukumu Girls High School brings the total number of people who have died from a suspected bacterial infection to three.
The Form 4 student reportedly died while receiving medical care at Kakamega County Referral Hospital.
Following an outbreak at the school, the 18-year-old student was transported to the facility and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) early in April.
According to her parents, Rasoha Mambili and Paul Mambili, the deceased student had returned home during the middle of the semester due to illness.
The parents told Citizen. Digital that they had attempted unsuccessfully to seek medical attention at multiple hospitals.
The most recent death brings the total number of students who have passed away due to an outbreak of bacterial infection at the school to three.
After 500 additional students were reportedly infected, the school was closed indefinitely on Monday.
In late March, 72 students from the Kakamega County school were admitted to the Kakamega County General Hospital, with health officials suspecting a Cholera outbreak.
However, after tests revealed a possibility of food poisoning, county public health officials ruled out Cholera.
According to a committee formed to investigate the incident, the school used a poisonous chemical to preserve cereals and contaminated spring water to supplement the water supply.
“Because of a desire to make sure their cereals are consumed, they use an unscrupulous chemical called Nova to preserve the cereal,” Senator Khalwale said.
