The Ministry of ICT, Innovation, and Youth Affairs has developed Ajira Clubs in various universities across the country to provide students with access to the Ajira Digital Programme.
The government launched the program with the goal of providing free training and mentorship to youth on how to work online, preparing youth for the future of work, and earning income online.
The Ajira platform is available online at ajiradigital.go.ke and in CIHs/ AYECs, where youth learn how to take advantage of the opportunities provided by the gig economy.
Ms. Maureen Mbaka, Chief Administrative Secretary, ICT and Broadcasting, stated that the country has seen success stories of students earning money online through content creation, digital marketing, transcription work, and translation.
“Under this programme, we have the aspect of sustainability where we encourage those who have gone through the training and are at the point of earning a living online,” said Mbaka.
Those who have succeeded, she says, are encouraged to train others and expand their businesses by hiring more young people.
The CAS stated on Tuesday at the University of Nairobi Towers during the Hult Prize 2022 Campus Finals and Partnership Proposal that the government has launched several programs to prepare the youth, who are a critical resource to development.
Mbaka stated that the ICT Ministry encourages the country’s innovative youth to use one of the Huduma Whitebox, a one-stop shop for those interested in presenting, sharing, and selling their idea, innovation, invention, or solution.
She stated that the program has over 1500 registered innovators and approximately 300 innovations, and she encouraged young innovators to visit whitebox.go.ke to learn more.
“Through the website, whitebox.go.ke, the youth can forward their innovations and ideas for promotion and support upon evaluation of viability,” stated the CAS.
Mbaka stated that the program evaluates innovations and provides access to markets and marketing expertise, legal advice, access to government funding programs, research institutions, innovation capacity hubs and centers, investors and mentors, co-innovation and co-creation.
The e-Learning Portal also offers self-paced modules for early-stage businesses on business modeling, pitching, validation, marketing, sales, start-up funding, and legal processes.
She stated that the government recognizes the enormous potential of the country’s youth, the opportunities available in innovation and the digital space, and will assist them in taking advantage of these opportunities.

Mbaka praised the Hult Prize-UoN community for the outstanding work they were doing to encourage and assist both graduate and undergraduate students in showcasing their start-ups on social entrepreneurship in order to change the world.
“Your clarion call to build a business that would employ at least 2,000 people by 2024 while creating a positive impact on the world is testament to your great efforts in ensuring that the youth of this country find meaningful employment that will positively impact our country’s future,” she added.
