5 Kisumu Students Hospitalised Following a Matatu Road Accident
Following a matatu involvement in a collision on the KenduBay-Katito route, five female students are being treated for serious injuries at the Nyakach Sub-County Hospital in Kisumu County.
The tragedy occurred when one of the matatu’s tires exploded, causing the vehicle to deviate off the road and crash. All of the students, aged 16 to 17, had fractured limbs and other bruises as a result.
Joseph Ng’ang’a, the regional traffic chief for Nyanza, told Citizen Digital that the victims were fortunate to be alive and that the driver of the ill-fated matatu fled the scene shortly after the collision.
According to Ng’ang’a, law enforcement is presently pursuing the driver.
As schools reopen, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has encouraged all motorists to guarantee the safety of students.
The authority stated in a statement that during previous back-to-school seasons, noncompliance led to both fatal and serious injuries.
“Previous years have recorded violations leading to fatal and serious injuries among school children and it is the responsibility of motorists to prevent these unfortunate incidences,” the statement read.
Additionally, the NTSA asked parents to transport their children to and from school using only compliant and roadworthy vehicles.
To verify compliance and roadworthiness, the agency advises parents to download the authority’s mobile app (NTSA app) from the Google Play Store or App Store and enter the vehicle’s license plate number for verification.
“We also call upon all drivers and boda boda riders operating within school zones to adhere to the 30kph speed limit in line with the requirements of the law.”
