The government would give 23,000 computers to all technical and vocational education and training institutions across Kenya so that young Kenyans could use their tech skills in the local and global digital markets.
Eliud Owalo, the cabinet secretary for information, communications, and the digital economy, said that the government would connect institutions to high-speed, high-quality internet to ensure that young people are ready to enter the digital market.
He also asked investors who want to put money into technical education in the country to work with the government for their benefit.
Owalo stated that the government is anticipating public-private partnerships in the ICT and innovation spheres to address concerns within the tech and innovation ecosystem, including training, talent development, placement, and the creation of digital jobs.
He stated that digital technology is changing economies and societies at an unprecedented rate in education, communication, innovation, finance, commerce, and industry and that the government is eager to participate in the technological revolution of the twenty-first century.
“Our engagement with the revolution will be on big data, robotics, artificial intelligence, e-learning, internet, e-commerce, creative economy, and the digital economy among others,” he stated.
Today, Owalo spoke at the opening of the Innovation Exhibition at Kenyatta International Convention Centre, where numerous teams, including youths, institutions, government departments, Corporations, and the private sector, displayed their creations.
He said that Kenya’s goal of 100% digitalized government services, internet access in every home, e-learning, e-commerce, e-agriculture, e-health, and membership in a worldwide wired world community requires a large number of tech-savvy people who can handle many networks.
Owalo stated, “The human resource will manage infrastructure, networks, and applications and provide innovative solutions for a digitally empowered nation."
He said President William Ruto and his government were still committed to investing in developing digital talent for the future and ensuring enough people to meet the needs of Kenya and the rest of the world.
Owalo declared that the government is investing in the institutions and infrastructure required to develop the country into a world-class digital society that would serve as the digital headquarters of Africa.
He stated that the government wants to digitize at least 5,000 government services and processes during the next six months and the Cabinet, adding that 350 government services and procedures have already been digitized.
"And over the next five years of the Kenya Kwanza government, we purpose to digitize all government records,” he added.
Owalo said the government would work with domestic and international partners to add 100,000 kilometers to the national fiber optic network. He also noted that internet hotspots are already being sent to different markets.
We anticipate offering up to 25,000 hotspots throughout the next five years.
He stated that these hotspots would transform towns and marketplaces into digital hubs.
He noted that the government’s many efforts, including the Hustler Fund and internet connectivity, are designed to generate jobs and riches, particularly for those at the bottom of the social pyramid.
The CS stated that the display demonstrated that the country has tech-savvy youth as part of its national assets. The government is committed to upskilling and retooling its technology skills to make them globally competitive.
In his remarks, the Principal Secretary for ICT and the Digital Economy, Eng. John Tanui stated that the government is taking the required steps to enable affordable access to digital gadgets for Kenyans.
The PS stated that the government would also guarantee that adequate norms, regulations, and structures governing how services are executed are in place to prevent cyber risks.
“We will protect the digital spaces, enhance awareness and provide skills capability, as well as ensure that there is compliance in data to avoid cyber risks,” he stated.
