TVETs to Share Equipment with Teacher Training Institutions -PS Muoria
Technical Vocational and Education Training (TVET) institutions will share training equipment with teacher training institutions in the same geographic region, PS Esther Muoria has established
To implement the directive, according to Esther Muoria, the ministry of education, through her department, will shortly create a map of all the TVETs and teacher training institutions in the same area.
She stated that the initiative’s objective is to assist teachers in acquiring the technical skills and knowledge necessary to implement the new Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) because TVETs already possess the necessary learning equipment.
She was speaking at the ceremonial opening of the Kenya Teachers College Principals Association’s (KTCPA) annual four-day conference in Mombasa.
Muoria stated that there is a plan to establish a partnership between teacher training colleges and Technical and Vocational Education and Training institutions (TVETs). This collaboration aims to utilize the available equipment collectively across these institutions.
He mentioned that efforts will be made to assist teachers in acquiring the necessary technical skills and expertise required for the successful implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). The equipment in the TVET institutions facilitates this assistance.
In a speech read on his behalf by the PS, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu stated that the CBC is a value-based curriculum that seeks to equip learners and youth with the necessary 21st century skills for their own development and the development of the nation.
According to him, with the implementation of CBC, the potential of each learner is identified at a young age, and teachers play a central role in these processes by guiding the learner to identify various pathways based on their talents and potential.
As teacher educators, this must be the instructor’s motivating force and goal for every trainee who passes through their hands, he said.
Ezekiel Machogu remarked that the timing of the conference was well-suited for teacher educators to strategize the path ahead.
He emphasized the significance of generating highly competent teachers from colleges who could proficiently execute the competency-based curriculum within schools.
Machogu articulated that the key duty extended beyond producing adept educators for educational institutions.
It encompassed equipping teachers with the aptitude to cultivate young minds from their formative years until they mature into capable and conscientious contributors to the nation’s growth.
“I have no doubt that teachers leaving your colleges at the end of the course will have been thoroughly prepared to implement the education reforms,” he said.
Machogu stated that the government will collaborate closely with private TTCs by establishing communities of practice to complement each other’s efforts and learn from each other in order to provide quality and effective instructors for both public and private schools attended by Kenyan children.
He praised the TTCs for initiating the implementation of competency-based teacher education (CBTE) with the first cohort of pre-service and upgrade teachers in 2021.
The Teacher Service Commission (TSC) has already hired a number of the first batch of upgrade candidates, according to him, who graduated in December 2022.
According to him, the Pre-service training has been concluded for two years, and the third and final year will commence in September 2023.
Saul Barasa, chairman of the KTCPA, stated that the upcoming conference is of the utmost importance, as members will be discussing issues pertaining to education reform that impact instructors.
Empowering the Teacher-Educator in an Era of Education Reform is the theme of the conference.
“I can confirm that all teacher preparation institutions have adopted the new curriculum known as the Competency Based Teacher Education Program,” said Barasa, who is also the chief principal of Kibabii DTC.
