TSC Recruitment: Vetting of Teachers & Handling of Complaints Begins at County Level

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) recruitment process for 14,460 teachers is ongoing to help fill staff shortages in public primary and secondary schools.

The TSC posted the names of those who have been shortlisted for positions in secondary schools and special-needs institutions on its website.

This is a first for the Commission, and it demonstrates its commitment to increasing transparency during the hiring process.

Currently, vetting of applicants’ documents and interviews have begun in the counties, and successful applicants will be hired in accordance with the roadmap posted on the TSC website.

The Vetting and Handling of Complaints at the county level began on Thursday, July 28th, 2022, and is expected to conclude on Wednesday, August 3rd, 2022.

According to TSC Chief Executive Officer Dr. Nancy Macharia, the new teachers will also help steer the 100 percent transition policy.

Dr Macharia stated in a media advertisement that 5,000 teachers will be assigned to public primary, secondary, and training institutions on permanent and pensionable terms of service.

Secondary schools will receive 3,972 teachers, while primary schools will receive 1,000, and teacher training colleges will receive 28.

“Successful candidates will be posted to serve in any part of the country and not necessarily in the county or school where they were interviewed,” Dr. Macharia said.

The recruitment process for Karima Boys High School in Nyeri County will take place at Othaya Girls High School.

Merit lists generated during the recruitment for both primary and secondary institutions will be used in subsequent recruitment processes throughout the fiscal year, according to the statement.

To lessen the pressure and improve learning standards, the TSC announced that it will replace 8,230 teachers who left the service due to natural attrition.

Of these, 6,539 will be assigned to elementary schools and 1,691 to secondary schools.

The announcement was a positive step toward addressing the nationwide shortage of over 100,000 teachers in primary and secondary schools.

Dr. Macharia recently stated that the government was committed to ensuring that there were enough teachers to handle the large number of students entering secondary schools.

She also stated that priority will be given to sub-county secondary schools, which admit the majority of students.

“It is our determination as a Commission to ensure that the 100 percent transition policy succeeds to guarantee all children their basic right to education,” said Dr. Macharia.

In addition, the Commission intends to hire 386 contract teachers in difficult-to-staff areas. Primary schools will receive 114 teachers, while secondary schools will receive 272.

Eligible candidates must be Kenyans and registered with the TSC, according to TSC guidelines.

Applicants seeking positions in primary schools must have a P1 certificate, while those seeking positions in secondary and technical colleges must have a diploma and a Bachelor’s degree in Education, respectively.

The TSC stated that the recruitment process is free of charge, but cautioned candidates against falling victim to fraudsters.
