TSC Fills 14,738 Teacher Promotion Positions, Releases Letters

14,738 Positions for Chief Principals, Principals, Deputy Principals, Deputy Principals, Head Teachers, Deputy Head Teachers, Senior Masters, and Senior Teachers have been filled.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has sent over 1,900 letters of promotion to county school administrators. Several counties have already begun issuing posting letters to promoted teachers.

Since the conclusion of the interviews, there have been delays in disseminating the letters. The newly assigned teachers have received their letters in advance, allowing them to report to their new station and begin work next term.

In December 2022, TSC initially advertised for 14,738 teacher promotions before canceling the advertisement. It then invited additional applications in January, March, and May of this year, after failing to attract the required number of candidates.

The Commission has not yet issued letters to teachers who submitted applications to become senior teachers. Some teachers have been operating as senior teachers and are awaiting confirmation.

The majority of teachers who attended promotion interviews in March and were successfully shortlisted for the positions for which they applied have not yet been posted, according to the TSC database, which is also accessible in the offices of county and sub county directors.

Treasury is releasing funds in increments, according to a senior TSC official, who attributes the delays to a lack of funding. He states that the Commission will continue to promote and place instructors progressively as long as it continues to receive funding.

The chief executive officer of the TSC, Nancy Macharia, has faulted teachers for missing out on promotions and for their own stagnation. She alleged that instructors were unwilling to apply for promotions in other counties.

While conducting teacher promotions, the commission was faced with the challenge of ‘promotion-based localization,’ in which teacher promotions are now dependent on the number of vacancies in a particular county.

The TSC boss noted that the commission advertised 14,738 vacancies for the promotion of teachers to different grades in order to fill vacancies created by natural attrition. However, only 11,231 instructors were hired, and 3,507 positions lacked qualified candidates.

There were 1,021 vacancies reserved for educators eligible for affirmative action. The TSC advertised for the positions of chief principal, principal, assistant principal, senior master, headteacher, assistant headmaster, and senior teacher for regular and special schools.
