Schools to Repay Sh35m lost in Bungoma Bursary Scam.
Governor of Bungoma, Ken Lusaka, stated that schools that got extra funds for ‘ghost’ students will refund the money to the county education fund.
This follows a productive consultative meeting with school administrators on Saturday.
Monday, at Jamhuri Day celebrations at Amutala stadium in Kimilili, the governor stated that the previous administration did not have the proper protocols for identifying pupils in need of scholarship support.
Lusaka stated that the fund was intended to support bright but needy children gain access to a quality education, but that it did not adequately support students from low-income households.
The county executive stated that his administration will establish a new committee to vet and verify scholarship recipients.
“During my campaigns in August, I faced a lot of defeat from my opponents who accused me of having plans to scrap the scholarship kitty. I have no such an intention, but only to streamline it,” Lusaka said.
The said his task force committees are close to completing their final reports on the alleged graft cases that occurred during the administration of previous governor Wycliffe Wangamati, confirming that he will soon release the full report.
“Immediately I was sworn in as the governor, I said that I can’t begin implementing my promises without knowing the current status of the county. I therefore decided to form task forces that will do investigations and file a report on graft cases claims,” Lusaka said.
The governor also stated that his administration will work with banks to ensure funds are deposited into school accounts on schedule so that students have sufficient time to be in school.
Lusaka praised Bungoma citizens for maintaining calm during the mini-elections and asked the newly-elected senator of Bungoma, Wafula Wakoli, to collaborate with him for the benefit of the county.
“Wakoli you are a young and energetic, use this time to better Bungoma,” the county chief said.
The governor commended the MCAs of Bungoma for passing the climate bill, stating that it will significantly alter the county.
