Raila Odinga Opposes Unjustifiable Rise in University Tuition Fees
The leader of the Azimio coalition, Raila Odinga, has stated that the increase in university tuition is untenable.
According to Raila, the action will reduce access to education for all Kenyans.
The leader of the opposition stated that the country requires free education for all more than ever before.
He stated that free education would have been a central component of the Azimio plan for the country had they won the election.
Raila emphasized that, at this moment, free education up to the university level, which is a fundamental aspect of the Azimio vision, is of paramount importance for our nation.
He expressed concern about the increasing inaccessibility of university education and found it unacceptable.
With the implementation of the Education Taskforce’s proposed financing model, the majority of students are concerned that they may not be able to enroll in their preferred institutions.
Some students have expressed concern that despite the government’s warning, numerous institutions have increased tuition.
This is despite the fact that the government had previously warned institutions against fee increases.
Geoffrey Monari, the CEO of the Universities Fund, stated that universities have entered into a memorandum of understanding with their organization, which is contingent upon the fees they currently charge.
He further explained that if any university chooses to raise its fees, the memorandum of understanding will be nullified, and they will face charges accordingly.

The state has also reviewed the formula for student funding and will now award scholarships based on financial need.
