Primary School Headteachers Hold Workshops To Improve Math, Social Studies
Meru primary school headteachers led workshops aimed at improving pupils’ performance in mathematics and social studies.
Teachers from the Kenya Primary Schools Heads Association held capacity-building workshops in Igembe, Tigania, and Imenti, bringing together teachers in charge of the two subjects.
The workshops, according to Kepsha Meru chairman Bernard Kiraguh, were inspired by the county’s low mean score in the two subjects.
He spoke at Kaaga Girls Secondary School during a workshop.
According to Kiraguh, the county received a mean score of 244.68 in the 2021 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education, with 48.59 in mathematics and 47.99 in social studies.
“The two subjects pulled us down to a mean score of less than 250. That’s why we are trying to find ways in which we can improve them and maintain good performance in the other subjects,” he said.
The chairman stated that their main goal was to achieve a mean of at least 255 and more than 50% in the two subjects.
Sponsors from the private sector who attended the workshops included Targeter Publishers, Equity Bank, Solution, and Trans-nation Sacco.
The stakeholders pledged to support the cause of improved performance in this year’s exam.
Targeter CEO Peter Kiarie stated that the company, which primarily publishes learning materials, will send experts in the two subjects to mentor teachers on how to improve their performance.
The company also rewarded the county’s top-performing schools and motivated the poorest students by providing them with free learning materials.

“We have made a resolution to support each other in every way possible, to realise better grades in the future,” Kiarie said.
Loreen Kaimenyi, marketing manager at Solution Sacco, stated that her organization will continue to financially support teachers in order to help them improve and, in turn, deliver their work.
Her sentiments were echoed by her counterpart from the Trans-nation Sacco, Betty Kairuthi, who stated that they are also looking into ways to motivate teachers and students to improve the county’s performance.
