Parents Commend Ministry for Allowing JSS Learners to Wear Primary School Uniforms

The Ministry of Education’s decision to permit Junior Secondary School learners to wear their primary school uniforms has been commended by the National Parents Association (NPA).

Chairperson Silas Obuhatsa expressed appreciation for the government’s consideration of the challenging economic conditions faced by more than 15 million parents.

Obuhatsa, lauding President William Samoei Ruto’s administration, emphasized the significance of prioritizing education during tough economic times.

The NPA chairperson conveyed that the directive, seen as significant news, has brought joy to parents. He underscored the importance of education for the youth, noting that President Ruto’s government values the country’s parents highly.

In addition to the positive response, Obuhatsa urged school leaders to involve parents in decisions related to extra levies. Concerns were raised about potential unauthorized fee increases, prompting the NPA boss to emphasize the need for collaboration between principals and parents in school management matters.

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu issued a warning to Junior Secondary Schools against imposing additional levies beyond the government fee structure. Reports of institutions charging extra levies and demanding new uniforms for Grade 7 learners prompted the ministry’s response.

To facilitate smooth learning at the Junior Secondary School level, Machogu directed that candidates who completed the 2023 Kenya Primary Schools Education Assessment (KPSEA) be allowed to join Grade 7 in the respective primary schools where they attended Grade 1-6.

Grade 7 learners should utilize classrooms previously used by Grade 8 students in 2023, and they are encouraged to wear the uniforms from their Grade 6 year while efforts are made to purchase new outfits for Junior Secondary School.

The directive aims to prevent schools from imposing levies under the guise of infrastructure expansion or uniform requirements for Grade 7 students.
