At the recently concluded Sahara Foundation competition, students from Olympic High School, Nairobi, placed second runner-up.

Three teams from Nigeria, Kenya, and Uganda participated in the tournament in Lagos, which was funded by the Sahara Foundation STEAM Regional competition.

The goal of the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) Program is to provide a creative outlet for young African inventors.

The Kenya edition was hosted by Asharami Synergy Kenya, a Sahara Group company, at Ihub in Nairobi.

Using Arduino, jumper wires, and a passive infrared motion sensor, the Olympic students created a “Ultrasonic Distance Sensor Alarm System.”

The students created the Sensor Alarm System, which combats insecurity and promotes energy conservation.

They explained that the device will reduce residential and vehicle break-ins in Kenya.

The STEAM competition featured 150 students who had access to in-depth classroom instruction and practical forums.
