Sister Jane Mmbone, the Principal of Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls High School, has addressed concerns regarding reports of 11 students being admitted to hospital with illness.

Speaking on Saturday, May 13, Mmbone assured parents that learning at the school has not been affected and that their daughters are safe.

“The school is okay, learning is going on, and our girls are safe,” Mmbone stated.

She requested that parents contact the school for accurate information on the health of their children.

Earlier reports had indicated that two students were admitted with malaria-like symptoms, while nine others complained of abdominal pains.

However, Mmbone has stated that three of the students have already been discharged and the others are responding well to medication.

“Parents should not panic, and anyone who needs information let him or her come to school, and I will give the true information. But things are okay,” she said.

She also emphasized that the school is taking measures to ensure the safety and protection of its students, including having a medical practitioner on staff.

The school had been closed indefinitely on April 3 due to an outbreak of illness linked to contaminated water and food.

Three students and a teacher lost their lives as a result of the contamination. The school was reopened on May 8 after Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Magoha implemented measures to prevent further spread of disease.

Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa also destroyed remaining contaminated cereals from the school.

Mmbone allayed fears that the school was staring at another disease outbreak. She insisted that things are okay and that learning is continuing without interruption.

She encouraged anyone seeking information to come directly to the school for accurate and reliable updates.
