Machogu Issues Junior Secondary School Guidelines for effective implementation

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has recently announced the release of the Junior Secondary Education (JSE) guidelines, even before students begin classes.

This comes just three days after the students’ admission.

In a statement, Machogu expressed his belief that these guidelines will be instrumental in ensuring the effective implementation of JSS education across Kenya.

The guidelines serve as a reference document for field officers and school managers, and will provide information that is critical for the successful implementation of JSS as a distinct level of education in Kenya.

It outlines the steps that school managers and officials must take to ensure a smooth transition from Primary School (Grade 6) to JSS.

The statement emphasized the need for schools to provide an adequate, appropriate, and safe physical environment for learners, including those with disabilities.

After JSS, students are expected to demonstrate effective communication skills, both verbally and non-verbally, and to exhibit social skills, spiritual and moral values, and ethical behavior.

The CS also highlighted that students should be able to explore, manipulate, manage, and conserve their environment effectively for learning and sustainable development, and to practice hygiene, sanitation, and nutrition skills to promote health.

Additionally, students are expected to exhibit good citizenship and civic responsibility, as well as apply digital literacy skills for communication and learning.

This cohort of JSS students will be the first to be integrated into the Competency-Based Curriculum, which was implemented in 2017.

The guidelines released by Machogu will play a crucial role in ensuring that students receive a well-rounded education that prepares them for life beyond the classroom.

The emphasis on providing a safe and supportive learning environment, as well as developing skills related to communication, ethics, and digital literacy, will be beneficial for students as they move forward in their academic and professional careers.
