KNUT to Boycott KNEC Exam Invigilation in Protest of Delayed Teacher Payments

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) is threatening to lobby its members to boycott national exam invigilation due to delayed payments.

According to the chairman of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), Patrick Munuhe, it took the government an entire year to pay teachers who proctored KCPE, KCSE, and KPSEA examinations in the previous year.

Speaking at the annual conference of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) held at Samoei Boys Secondary School in Nandi, Munuhe reported that despite numerous letters to the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), the payments had been delayed.

The KNUT leader added that teachers will not serve as invigilators for the upcoming national examinations if they do not receive explicit instructions on compensation.

Muluhe stated that they had provided the examination council with a two-week period to address the outstanding bills.

In the event that the bills were not promptly settled, he warned that the teachers were prepared to take action, including the potential refusal to invigilate the 2023 national examinations.

If the outstanding payment is not made, KNUT has threatened to mobilize the examiners to occupy the KNEC office.

“We have given the examination council two weeks to settle the bills or face the teachers’ wrath. If the bills are not settled the soonest, we are not going to invigilate the national examinations in 2023”, Muluhe said.

The union president scoffed at the government, stating that it was wrong to withhold teachers pay despite having subjected the teachers to unfavorable working conditions.

He pointed out that adhering to fair labor practices necessitates compensating workers in accordance with their completed tasks and promptly.

He observed that the teachers fulfilled their obligations as outlined in the agreement, but in response, they were met with disregard.
