KNUT Decry Tribal and Regional Attacks on TSC Non-Native Teachers
The Secretary General of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), Collins Oyuu, has cautioned politicians against inciting the public to reject newly posted headteachers and principals.
He expressed his concern over the attitude of some individuals towards teachers who are posted to schools in regions outside their native homes, which often results in tribal and regional attacks on teachers.
Oyuu emphasized that KNUT would not tolerate such attacks on teachers, which are based on tribal and regional lines.
He criticized the manner in which some leaders have handled the issue of relocating teachers who have been delocalized, stating that it has created animosity and incitement in some regions. He added that such treatment of teachers would further worsen the already worsening teacher shortage in the country.
Oyuu reminded everyone that the Constitution allows every Kenyan to live and work in any part of the country, provided they have the necessary licenses.
He condemned the spate of parents blocking learning activities in schools to reject newly posted teachers and demanded that politicians and parents alike respect the rights of all Kenyans to live and work anywhere in the country.
On the other hand, some leaders have demanded that tutors from their region, who were deployed in other areas, be returned.
For instance, Kiambu Senator Karung’o Thangwa demanded that all teachers from the Mount Kenya region, who were deployed in Narok, be redeployed to schools in the region.
Some parents alleged that they did not want to lose principals who had improved school performance, while others rejected principals accusing them of having poor performance records.
In conclusion, Oyuu’s warning to politicians against inciting the public to reject newly posted headteachers and principals is a call for unity and respect for the rights of all Kenyans to live and work anywhere in the country.
It is vital to avoid attacks on teachers based on tribal and regional lines, as this will further worsen the already worsening teacher shortage in the country. Instead, politicians and parents should focus on supporting teachers and ensuring that all students receive the best education possible.
