KNUT Addresses NSSF Deductions on Teachers Payslips and Unfulfilled Pay Increments

KNUT Secretary-General, Collins Oyuu, has voiced his concerns about the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) deductions and the impact on teachers’ salaries.

Oyuu highlighted that the issue of NSSF had been in Parliament since 2003, with energy being a recurring concern throughout the process.

Despite efforts to halt its implementation, NSSF subscriptions have now become mandatory, with both employees and employers required to contribute 360 Shillings.

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) boss questioned whether the authorities were fully aware of the financial burden this would place on teachers’ payslips.

Adding to the frustrations, Oyuu pointed out that the promised pay increase of seven to ten percent, announced by the President, had not yet materialized.

“Instead, the deductions from NSSF were causing a pay cut rather than the anticipated rise in income.”

Oyuu further emphasized that teachers had previously signed agreements with the Teacher Service Commission (TSC), which lacked any monetary benefits.

He called for a renegotiation of these terms to better address teachers’ concerns and welfare.

In light of the situation, Oyuu proposed that the seven to ten percent increase should be distributed more fairly.

He suggested that administrative positions should receive the higher percentage, while those earning below a certain threshold should also benefit from the ten percent increment.

As a union, KNUT said it is committed to advocating for improved terms and conditions of service for teachers across the Republic, ensuring their financial well-being and fair compensation for their dedication to education.
