Kisii County Education Director dismisses alarming infections in schools

Philip Chirchir, director of education for Kisii County, has dismissed claims of alarming infections in schools throughout the county.

On Thursday, Chirchir refuted claims on social media that students from multiple schools in the county were hospitalized and stated that students with flu-like symptoms had received treatment.

He advised parents to remain calm and assured their children’s safety in boarding schools.

According to him, those who have flu symptoms have received the finest medication because their insurance covers it.

“Such alarming reports are only aimed at scaring parents and achieving certain evil plans. We must admit that our teachers and school administrators do a wonderful job taking care of thousands of students in boarding schools,” he said.

Chirchir stated that stakeholders will conduct a joint inspection of schools to investigate claims of a rise in upper respiratory infections.

A team of surveillance officers has reportedly already visited elementary and secondary schools in the county for infection control and hygiene and sanitation education.

The head of education added that the officers, along with county health officials, security personnel, and provincial administration officials, will convene early the following week to plan sensitisation programs in schools.

“We have already communicated with school heads to improve hygiene and sanitation. This is a continuous exercise, and we could wish to have unfortunate cases reported as it happened elsewhere.”

Chirchir also cautioned school administrators to ensure that food is properly stored and inspected before serving it to students.

Ototo Abuga, an administrator at HEMA Hospital in Kisii, stated that it was common for students to seek treatment at their facility.

“It is not that we are treating the same ailment among the students visiting here they are exhibiting different symptoms. There is no cause for alarm,” he said.
