Kilgoris Boys Dormitory Destroyed by Fire following Students Riot

Monday, Kilgoris Boys High School was closed indefinitely following the destruction of a dormitory by a fire believed to have been initiated by students.

Philip ole Limpaso, the principal of the school, stated that the problem began on Sunday when the water was disconnected due to power issues.

“On Sunday, we had a water shortage problem brought about by transformer complications. We talked to Kenya Power and they promised to intervene,” he said.

“We communicated this information to our students and exhorted them to remain calm while the issue was being resolved.

“They appeared persuaded by our efforts to resolve the matter. We later learned that was not the case, as they attempted to torch the dining hall and one of the classrooms around 11 p.m.

Limpaso stated that the students’ efforts were unsuccessful because the fire was extinguished before it could destroy the facilities. To restore order, the Transmara West subcounty security team was dispatched.

Monday morning at 6 a.m., however, the enraged students managed to torch one of the dormitories.

The school administration and security personnel were unsuccessful in putting out the fire.

Chrispine Omondi, director of education for the Transmara West subcounty, stated that the school had been suspended indefinitely to allow for investigations.

Unconfirmed reports indicated that close to ten students were being held by police in connection with the incident.
