Igathe Unveils Plan For Public Schools and ECDE Teachers
Polycarp Igathe, the Nairobi Gubernatorial candidate for the Azimio La Umoja Coalition Party, has committed to alleviate the city’s public school shortfall.
Nairobi’s governor candidate has stated that he will make public land available and ensure that it is delimited for public schools in the capital.
Igathe, who has upped his campaigns in the Capital City, has also promised to check into the welfare of ECDE teachers.
Once elected in August’s general elections, he promised to raise their pay and improve their working conditions.
Igathe lamented the status of public schools in Nairobi, particularly in heavily populated regions, during a meeting with leaders of the Kenya Primary School Head Teachers Association in Naivasha.
He stated that due to the scarcity of public schools, parents are having difficulty enrolling their children.
The Azimio Coalition’s gubernatorial candidate has pledged to reclaim all land taken from public schools and to repair infrastructure in public schools, particularly ECDE institutions.
Igathe further indicated that if elected, he will ensure that teachers’ welfare is prioritized at City Hall by the Nairobi City County Government.
“Once in office, I will fix the shortage of schools, and infrastructure, deliver security and bursaries and be an ambassador for teachers’ welfare. I will triple the ECDE teacher’s salaries because I want to run a County where employees perform under good working conditions,” he added.
Nairobi County Director of Education Moses Karati and Nairobi Branch Kenya National Union of Teachers Executive Secretary Danson Mugwe were also in attendance.

Janet Ouko, a former Nairobi City County Education CEC who was also present, endorsed Igathe’s gubernatorial run.
He went on to say that out of all the candidates vying for the Nairobi governorship, he is the only one who is qualified.
Senator Johnson Sakaja of the Kenya Kwanza coalition, who is supported by UDA Presidential candidate William Ruto, is challenging Igathe in the contest.
