Diana Chepkemoi, a Meru University of Science and Technology (MUST) student who went to Saudi Arabia in search of greener pastures but found none, has been readmitted to the university to complete her Bachelor of Education Arts degree.

Chepkemoi, speaking after being met at the university by the vice chancellor, professor Romanus Odhiambo, and the students’ union, expressed her satisfaction, stating that after her ordeal, she felt “alive again.

She said, "Thank you for bringing me back to life. I felt dead at one point.”

Diana remarked that her tale should serve as a wake-up call to those facing comparable obstacles. She implored well-wishers to save lives by saving themselves.

Among the many pledges made by political leaders regarding her support, Rodgers Kimpempe, a businessman, oversaw her enrollment, reaffirming that he would fully fund her university education till its conclusion.

As a result, he requested that others who had made commitments or promises honor them to sustain Diana at the university.

Speaking on behalf of the institution, VC Odhiambo stated that Diana’s case is one of many similar cases of students who cannot complete their education and realize their aspirations due to financial restrictions.

Thus, the VC urged the government of President William Ruto to honor its promise to fulfill the ambitions of all needy pupils.

The president of the students’ union echoed the comments of the vice chancellor and urged the government to ensure that all individuals, especially students seeking a better life in the Middle East and Saudi Arabia, are secure and closely monitored.

Mr. Kipembe stated during the welcoming of the student who reported to the institution today that he learned of Ms. Chepkemoi’s difficulties through social media and decided to assist her.

Mr. Kipembe stated, “I learned about Ms. Chepkemoi’s difficulties through social media and chose to make a difference in her life by paying her four-year school expenses.”

He stated that he acted out of philanthropy, not for political benefit, and he urged leaders, especially politicians, to assist the students and many others.

They were facing similar difficulties in educational institutions.

Professor Romanus Otieno welcomed Ms. Chepkemoi back to the college and urged Kenyans to learn philanthropy and, at the least, establish endowment funds in educational institutions to care for suffering students.

“Ms. Chepkemoi’s situation is one in a million, and we’re asking Kenyans to be generous enough to help her,” he said.

He stated that the university would place Ms. Chepkemoi in the student work-study program, a platform meant to empower disadvantaged students to assist her in meeting her needs.

Professor Otieno stated, “She will also enjoy a flexible schedule to study and serve at the university library while being granted housing within the university.”

Ms. Chepkemoi was admitted to the university on August 31, 2017, to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Food Science and Management through the School of Agriculture and Food Science during the 2017-2018 academic year.

She was only enrolled in the program for the first semester of the school year. On August 29, 2018, she submitted a letter of deferment owing to financial concerns.

She also requested a course transfer to pursue a Bachelor of Education, Arts on May 15, 2019, which was authorized, but she did not report back.

Ms. Chepkemoi left Kenya in July 2021 after securing a position as a home manager for one of the royal families in Saudi Arabia.

This occurred after she had been out of school for more than four years, and it was her only option.

She stated that after making a mistake on her first day in Saudi Arabia and receiving her boss’s fury, she realized that life in Saudi Arabia would not be a walk in the park.

She reported that her supervisor once informed her that she had no choice but to do the right thing because he had bought her until the end of her contract.

“He said that if I did anything naughty, he would make sure I went to jail,” she added.

Ms. Chepkemoi praised God for keeping her alive and those who had made efforts to ensure that she resumed her studies after being welcomed to the school.

“I hope that my case will serve as an illustration to Kenyans that there are those suffering in silence and that they will come to their aid,” she said.
