46,000 TSC Intern Teachers to be Confirmed Automatically
TSC Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Nancy Macharia, disclosed that the commission intends to convert the employment status of 46,000 teachers currently on contract to permanent and pensionable positions after completing two years.
The contracts of the 46,000 intern teachers recruited last year were extended in January for an additional year due to a lack of budgetary allocation. 21,500 of these interns were deployed to JSS.

Interns expressed discomfort with the extension arrangement, asserting their qualifications and TSC registration. They are dissatisfied with being treated akin to college trainees receiving stipends instead of salaries.
Emphasizing the commission’s commitment to addressing the situation, Ms. Macharia assured that these teachers would be accorded first priority in filling vacancies at schools. Furthermore, she indicated that their hiring process would involve automatic placement without the need for advertising the positions.
This move aims to provide a clear pathway for the intern teachers, ensuring job continuity and a transition towards permanent and pensionable employment by 2025.

The extension of their contracts allows for the necessary administrative steps to be taken, aligning with the commission’s budgetary constraints.
Under the internship program, secondary school teachers on contract receive Sh20,000 per month, while their primary school counterparts receive Sh15,000.
The extension of intern contracts faced opposition from the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers, with secretary-general Akelo Misori expressing concern over the prolonged internship period. KUPPET argued that this demotivates teachers already grappling with challenging working conditions and low salaries.
