World’s Largest Floating University, World Odyssey, Makes Third Visit to Port of Mombasa
The Port of Mombasa welcomed the arrival of the World Odyssey, recognized as the world’s largest floating University, on Friday, February 9, marking its third visit to the Coastal city.
Known affectionately as “Semester at Sea,” this academic voyage platform will spend six days along Kenya’s coastline. With 763 passengers, including 585 students, aboard the MV World Odyssey, the semester-long program charges Ksh6 million per semester.

According to the Kenya Ports Authority, the students will engage in educational tours at various higher learning institutions, explore the city through excursions, and visit wildlife parks during their stay.
The Odyssey, resembling a college or university, serves as an educational vessel, accommodating approximately 800 participants as it navigates the globe, offering insights into the histories of visited countries.
Highlighting the diverse student body, the KPA mentioned a Kenyan student among the mixed nationalities on board, embarking from India with Mauritius slated as the next port of call.
Facilities on the ship include reception and administrative offices, classrooms equipped with cutting-edge technology, and fitness spaces such as an indoor gym.

Outdoor amenities feature a spacious sun deck hosting recreational activities like basketball and volleyball courts, alongside a swimming pool for passenger enjoyment.
The Port of Mombasa’s increased cruise vessel calls underscore its burgeoning connectivity and emergence as a hub for cruise tourism in Africa, as stated by the ports authority.
Notably, the recent hosting of the MSC Poesia, one of the largest cruise vessels to dock at the port, reaffirms its growing appeal in the cruise tourism sector.
