The wings to fly scholarship program will begin next week, according to Equity Bank Group CEO James Mwangi.
Mwangi said all students from low-income families are being encouraged to apply for financial assistance.
He directed parents and guardians to the nearest Equity bank branches or agents to obtain application forms.
Mwangi stated on Wednesday that the institution will recruit 20,000 students over the next two years, with 10,000 students joining the incoming class.
“For the next two years, Equity group has contributed 2,000 scholarships and the government through the World Bank has contributed 18,000 scholarships,” he said.
“The application forms will be available to applicants beginning next week, and we will then begin a rigorous selection process of the most deserving students.”
Mwangi, on the other hand, urged students who would be unsuccessful to enroll in public day secondary schools, where tuition is fully subsidized by the government.
“Should we face a situation like that of last year where we selected 10,000 scholars out of the 114,000 applicants, we appeal to parents to help their children get admitted in day schools,“ he said.
"This will ensure they too can be in line with the government’s 100 per cent secondary school transition policy.”
Mwangi stated that by the end of the two years, 57,000 students, up from the current 37,000, will have benefited from the program.
He stated that Sh50 billion has already been spent on the program.
According to Mwangi, nearly 98 percent of beneficiaries have completed high school, with 86% enrolling in universities.
Mwangi stated that 715 students were able to study at prestigious universities abroad.
The program pays for the beneficiaries’ tuition, uniforms, pocket money, transportation, and shopping.
The Equity Group CEO was speaking at Kirinyaga’s Baricho Boys High School during a four-day annual mentorship program for 2,000 students.
Beneficiaries are currently enrolled in secondary school in a variety of schools throughout the central region.
Similar programs will be held for two weeks in other 16 centers across the country for other beneficiaries.
The banker encouraged the students to embrace core values that will help them not only in their academics but also in their personal lives.
As future leaders, he urged them to cultivate a culture of accountability while also practicing self-discipline in order to achieve the desired transformative change in the country.
“Our country requires positive leadership and for this, you all need to grow beyond academics,” Mwangi said.
“Be your own leader, shine within and outside class. Join school clubs in order to sharpen your skills.”
Furthermore, he urged them to invest their time wisely in their studies because the country relies on their efforts to propel it forward.
Mwangi challenged them to be big thinkers and jealously guard their esteem, pride, and self-dignity while building on a positive and resilient character.
