At least one person was killed and several others were injured on Monday, April 3, 2023, during the distribution of bursary forms at Githurai 45 in Kiambu county.

According to witnesses, the residents fought to be served by Ruiru Member of Parliament Simon King’ara, who was personally handing out forms at the time of the incident.

“The crowd was large when people began pushing each other when victim number 783 fell to the ground. "After falling, he was tragically run over and killed, while three other women were injured and rushed to a nearby hospital,” a witness explained.

James Atanga was rushed to a local hospital before being transferred to Kenyatta University Teaching, Research, and Referral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

He was 45 years old and had two children.

According to his wife Pamela Munyangi, James had left the house to collect a bursary application for their Form Four-aged child.

According to local media, she stated that her husband had received a call from a friend around 6.00 am, asking him to go and collect a bursary form.

When he arrived at the location, there were numerous disorderly individuals who were pushing and fighting for a place in the queue. As a result of the stampede, her husband fell and succumbed to his injuries.

“The last time I saw my husband was on Monday morning when he left the house for Githurai 45, to secure the bursary forms for our two children, hoping they would subsequently get a bursary allocation of Ksh7,000 from our MP Simon King’ara.

Following the incident, the exercise was stopped.

According to the representative, the event would take place in three wards.

The MP wrote on Facebook that bursary form distribution had begun at the Githurai Kwa DO CDF hall, where Mwiki, Kiuu, and later Mwihoko wards would be distributed.

Sagwe’s wife lamented that the area Member of Parliament had converted the distribution of bursary forms into a political rally to strengthen his political support, without taking into account the dangers he was exposing the disadvantaged people to.

She further expressed that due to their impoverished and defenseless state, they had no option but to attend the location designated by the Member of Parliament for the distribution of the bursary forms.
