The Elimu scholarship programme, funded by the World Bank and implemented through the Ministry of Education, is aimed at providing educational opportunities for bright and underprivileged students from low-income families.

This year, 9000 students have benefited from the programme, but in the Baringo South, North, and Tiaty regions, a large number of students from needy backgrounds may miss out on the opportunity to join form one.

This is due to the high levels of insecurity in these areas, which has impacted the ability of many parents to pay for their children’s education.

Only 46 successful candidates from 600 applicants were enrolled in the scholarship programme in Baringo, leaving a large number of students in the region unable to access the opportunity to further their education.

The insecurity in the region has resulted in the loss of parents for some students, and many families have been displaced and are living in extremely difficult conditions.

The Kabarnet Equity Bank manager, Micah Bett, who spoke at the flag-off of the scholarship, raised concern for the students who were unable to be enrolled in the programme and called for other financial institutions and well-wishers to come forward and support these students.

One of the few students who benefited from the scholarship came from the troubled Arabal region.

This student lost his father in a raid when he tried to resist the bandits and was shot dead.

Bett emphasized the importance of providing support for these students who have been affected by the ongoing insecurity in the region.

Overall, the Elimu scholarship programme provides a crucial lifeline for underprivileged students from low-income families.

However, in the Baringo South, North, and Tiaty regions, many students from needy backgrounds may be left behind due to the devastating impact of insecurity on their families and communities.

It is vital that other financial institutions and well-wishers step in to support these students and provide them with the opportunities they need to achieve their full potential.
