Former Education Cabinet Secretary, Professor George Magoha, was known for his high-profile and public career but kept his family life private.
He passed away on Tuesday night at the age of 71 and had a close-knit family of three; his wife, Dr Barbara Odudu Magoha, and their son, Dr Michael Magoha.
Dr Barbara Odudui Magoha, who is 65 years old, is also a medical doctor from Nigeria.
She holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (M,B.B.S) from the University of Lagos, Nigeria, awarded in 1982.
In 1993, she was awarded a Master of Medicine in Obstetrics and Gynaecology Specialization by the University of Nairobi.
Dr Magoha has been a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist based at the senior staff clinic at the University of Health Services in the institution since 2007, where she offers both curative and preventive services to staff, dependants, and university students.
Additionally, she serves as a Consultant Obstetrician Gynaecologist to various hospitals in Kenya such as Nairobi Hospital, the Aga Khan University Teaching Hospital, Mater Hospital, MP Shah, and the Kenyatta National Hospital.
Furthermore, Dr Magoha has also taught undergraduate and postgraduate medical students of the University of Nairobi as well as nurses and clinical officers from Kenya Medical Training College.
On the other hand, their son, Dr Michael Magoha is an alumnus of the University of Nairobi’s School of Medicine, where he also lectures. Despite Professor Magoha’s public persona, his wife and son have also made significant contributions to the medical field in Kenya, and their work should be acknowledged and celebrated.
Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition party leader Raila Odinga has expressed his condolences to the family of Professor George Magoha.
Mr. Odinga, in a statement, mourned him as both an academician and a transformational national leader.
He wrote, “I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Professor George Magoha, a transformational leader, illustrious scholar, dedicated public servant, and distinguished medical doctor who left an indelible mark on our country’s education system.”
Other national leaders, including ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, and Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, have also sent in their messages of condolence and celebrated the late Professor for his staunch leadership and advocacy for professionalism.
They have all described him as an astute leader, a scholar, and a great loss to the education sector.
