Weingartz Family Foundation Announces $2.2 Million Scholarships For Kenya
The Weingartz Family Foundation has given a grant of Ksh270 million ($2.2 million) to the International Samaritan (IntSam), an NGO, to extend its scholarship program in Kenya and Uganda. The NGO will award scholarships to 200 youths in the next three years, prioritising families who live in communities near dump sites.
The goal of the scholarship program is to aid individuals in escaping extreme poverty. These communities’ life expectancy is 35 years on average, according to the World Health Organization, due to rampant disease, injuries, and the lack of clean water. The garbage dump in Nairobi is one of the world’s largest, with more than 1 million people residing in neighbouring slums.
The grant will provide up to Ksh419,895 ($3,100) annually for each student’s education from primary school through college, covering tuition fees, uniforms, books, supplies, transportation, and food for their families. The NGO will begin its work in Nairobi and Kampala, targeting youths in Kenya initially.
The organisation plans to sponsor students who have the most significant needs and highest potential for success. The President of the NGO, Mike Tenbusch, stated that the grant aims to make education accessible to impoverished youths, who would not have the opportunity otherwise.
The Weingartz Family Foundation was inspired to contribute to the NGO’s cause after witnessing the impact it had on families in Ethiopia. The Foundation member, Dan Weingartz, praised the NGO for its mission to assist the poorest individuals. He commended the hope he witnessed among those served in garbage dump communities and stated that the scholarships would provide the seeds for the students’ futures.
In summary, the Weingartz Family Foundation has donated a significant grant to the International Samaritan, an NGO operating in Kenya and Uganda, to fund a scholarship program for 200 youths for the next three years. The grant’s primary objective is to assist impoverished individuals in escaping extreme poverty by providing them with the opportunity for education.
The scholarship program covers all expenses, including tuition fees, uniforms, books, supplies, transportation, and food for the family. The Weingartz Family Foundation was inspired by the NGO’s impact on families in Ethiopia and sees the scholarship program as an opportunity to sow the seeds for the students’ futures.
