Webometrics Rankings Names UoN Best In Kenya And EA
According to the most recent Webometrics rankings, the University of Nairobi is the best university in Kenya and the East African region, as well as the 12th best in Africa out of a total of 2,019 on the continent.
The university, which has topped the local rankings for the last seven years, is ranked 1,077 globally in the January rankings out of 11,998 higher education institutions. The university was ranked 13th in Africa last year.
Every year, Webometrics ranks universities and colleges (in January and July). The presence variable has been removed from the current ranking, and the new list is based on a university’s visibility, transparency (or openness), and excellence (or scholar).
Kenyatta University is the second-highest ranked Kenyan university, ranking 51 in Africa and 2,259 globally, with Egerton (65 in Africa, 2,244 globally) and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (66 in Africa, 2,459 globally) close behind.
Moi University (2,503 in the world) and Maseno University (121 in Africa, 3,457 in the world) round out the country’s top universities.
The list also shows that Kenyan public universities are ranked higher than private ones, despite the fact that they face numerous financial and management issues.
American universities dominate the rankings, accounting for nine of the top ten positions worldwide. Harvard is the first, followed by Stanford, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Oxford (UK). The University of Michigan, University of Washington, Cornell University, Columbia University New York, and John Hopkins University are among the others.
Universities were graded on visibility (50%) based on the number of external networks (subnets) linking to the institution’s webpages (normalised and then the maximum value chosen).
Kenyatta University
Webometrics considered the number of citations from the top 210 authors (excluding the top 20 outliers) for the transparency variable (10%), whereas excellence (40%) included the number of papers among the top 10% most cited in each of the 27 disciplines of the full database and considered data from 2016 to 2020.

A university’s Webometrics rank is strongly related to the volume and quality of content it publishes on the web. Some institutions, however, have been flagged for unethical behavior.
Strathmore (168 in Africa and 4,032 in the world), Technical University of Kenya (175 and 4,144), Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (251 and 5,336), Murang’a University of Technology (259 and 5,451), Kenya Forest Research Institute (284 and 5,872), United States International University (290 and 6,028), and University of Embu are the other Kenyan universities in the ranking (294 and 6,028).
