The Varkey Foundation has announced a Ksh10 million prize award for students in collaboration with the Chegg organization.
The Global Student Prize is a component of the Global Teacher Prize, which was won in 2019 by a Kenyan teacher named Peter Tabichi. Sunny Varkey, the former owner of the prestigious Hillcrest International School in Karen, Nairobi, founded the Varkey Foundation.
“The Global Student Prize is a Ksh 10 million ($100,000) award presented to an exceptional student, making a real impact on learning, the lives of their peers and on society beyond,“ read the statement.
The prize is intended to recognize the academic potential of students who are making a difference in their communities through various initiatives.
“Students applying for the Global Student Prize will be assessed on their academic achievement, impact on their peers, how they make a difference in their community and beyond.
“We also access how they overcome the odds to achieve, how they demonstrate creativity and innovation, and how they operate as global citizens,” read the statement in part.

Varkey, for one, stated that the award would recognize students’ efforts and improve educational quality.
Both the Global Teacher Prize and the Global Student Prize were established to highlight the importance of education in addressing the great challenges that lie ahead, ranging from climate change to rising inequality to global pandemics.

“With the world leaders now focused on rebuilding our world in the wake of the pandemic, I urge them to never forget that it is only by prioritizing education that we can safeguard all our tomorrows. Education is the key to facing the future with confidence,” he stated
How to Apply
Before submitting an application for the prize, applicants must first visit the Varkey foundation award platform and create an account.
Other members of the public may also submit nominations for students they believe are deserving of the award.
If students are nominated, the person nominating them will write a brief description explaining why on the internet.
The student who has been nominated will then receive an email informing them that they have been nominated and inviting them to apply for the prize.
The award, however, is only available to students aged 16 and under. Interested applicants are also encouraged to apply before the deadline of April 17.
