USIU Vice Chancellor Margee Ensign resigns, Lola Odubekun Takes Over
Vice Chancellor of United States International University (USIU), Margee Ensign, resigned after less than a year of service.
Chris Kananu, chairman of the USIU, said in a statement that Ensign resigned due to health concerns.
Kananu, speaking on behalf of the University, reported with a sense of both sadness and gratitude, the departure of Vice Chancellor Prof. Margee Ensign.
According to Kananu, Prof. Ensign has been confronted with personal medical challenges linked to the high altitude in Nairobi.
Her doctors have advised that she cannot continue to live and work in this location, prompting her departure from the university.
The University’s council and board have expressed gratitude for Ensign’s contributions to the institution’s tremendous achievements during her brief tenure.
Ensign has been commended for increasing new student enrollment, establishing a revitalized strategic plan, and implementing a new organizational structure.
The outgoing Vice-Chancellor has also been praised for her engagement with the institution’s external audiences.
According to Kananu, Prof. Ensign has been actively involved in community outreach initiatives, with a particular focus on vulnerable populations residing near the university.
Kananu further mentioned that Prof. Ensign’s exceptional leadership skills, efficient teamwork, and ability to engage with various stakeholders both within and outside the university have contributed to fostering a positive and productive work environment.
As a result, the motto “We are One” has helped to foster a strong sense of unity among all members.
Following Ensign’s departure, Lola Odubekun will assume the role of interim Vice Chancellor beginning September 1, 2023.
Odubekun is a member of the USIU-Africa University Council and has previously held the position of Chair.
She is a social scientist with a legal background and more than 25 years of specialized experience in criminal justice research, advocacy, and grant administration.
