Updated ECDE Teachers Salary in Kenya
Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) plays a vital role in a child’s educational journey, providing them with a strong foundation for future learning.
In Kenya, the responsibility for ECDE falls on county governments. The Council of Governors Education Committee has recently shed light on some key aspects of this important sector.
Firstly, it’s crucial to understand the scale of the ECDE sector in Kenya. According to recent data, Kenyan counties employ over 44,000 ECDE teachers.
These teachers are categorized into three groups. These are; Teachers on permanent and pensionable terms, ECDE teachers on 3-year contracts, and untrained teachers.

It’s worth noting that payment ranges for ECDE teachers in other Kenyan counties vary, with figures ranging from 9,420 to 38,380 Shillings.

According to SRC the reports claiming that the salaries of ECDE educators fall below the federally mandated minimum wage are deceptive. These reports were based on the basic income of these teachers, rather than the gross salary.
The Ministry of Education is advocating for better salaries for Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) teachers despite the Salaries and Remuneration Commission’s call for a salary cut.

On January 13, 2023, the SRC released a clarification on the compensation and perks of ECDE teachers in response to a request from county governments.
This move is part of the third pay review cycle, and all public officers, including ECDE teachers, are undergoing a salary review by the SRC, with results expected in June 2023.
Nairobi County Updated ECDE Teachers Salary
Nairobi City, being the capital, offers the highest salaries among these counties. Certificate holders receive 33,020 Shillings, diploma holders get 36,220 Shillings, and degree holders are paid 59,770 Shillings
Kisumu County
Kisumu provides competitive compensation, with certificate holders earning 32,800 Shillings and diploma holders receiving 36,000 Shillings. However, details about payments for degree holders in Kisumu are not specified.

In Nakuru, certificate holders earn 19,859 Shillings, but the payment information for diploma and degree holders is unavailable.

Lastly, in Kiambu (Ruiru & Limuru), teachers receive 28,000 Shillings for certificates, 30,980 Shillings for diplomas, and 47,900 Shillings for degrees.

Scheme of service for ECDE teachers
The Permanent Secretary for Basic Education, Dr. Belio Kipsang emphasizes the crucial role that ECDE teachers play at the pre-primary level and requested that the Senate committee negotiate with the SRC for better pay for these teachers.
Dr. Kipsang believes that quality ECDE can reduce the cost of education by 15%. He also urged the government to harmonize and establish one scheme of service for ECDE teachers across all counties to eliminate disparities in salary scales between permanent and contract-based teachers.
“The work done by ECDE teachers cannot be compared to the other levels of education as they are the first to interact and induct every child to the school life journey,” he said.

The Constitution of Kenya, 2010 establishes the Salary and Remuneration Commission (SRC) with two primary responsibilities. Firstly, it is responsible for establishing and reviewing the salaries and benefits of all State officers.
