UoN’s Enrolment Sharply Declines After Reforms.The University of Nairobi’s reforms have resulted in a significant drop in student enrollment over the last year. According to the Economic Survey 2022, the university’s student enrollment has decreased by 7,795 from 55,488 in 2020/2021 to 47,693 in 2021/2022.Female students decreased from 12,932 to 11,137 last year, while male students decreased from 42,556 to 36,556.The decrease in enrollment is thought to be the result of increased fees implemented by the university last year as part of its efforts to address financial challenges.For first-year government-sponsored students, the university raised undergraduate annual tuition and administrative fees from Sh26,500 to Sh59,000.For self-sponsored students, the university maintained the regulated tuition fee of Sh16, 000, which applies to all public universities, but increased administrative fees. Self-sponsored degrees, which would cost an average of Sh300, 000 in total now cost students over Sh600,000. ALSO READ:Fees for master’s courses in art, which were previously Sh275,000, have been raised by 147% to Sh680,000.The number of male students at Kenyatta University has decreased from 38,425 last year to 38,357 this year. Female students, on the other hand, have increased from 31,227 to 31,866.According to the Economic Survey, total enrolment in public universities is expected to fall from 452,100 in 2020/2021 to 448,5000 in 2021/2022.UoN’s Enrolment Sharply Declines After Reforms
