The Kenya Universities Staff Union (UASU) has expressed its opposition to the recent proposal to declare lecturers redundant.

UASU, along with the Kenya University Staff Union (KUSU) and the Kenya University and College Workers Union (KUDHEIHA), has issued a statement through their umbrella union, warning that if their demands are not met by April 10th, they will take further action.

The UASU Secretary General, Constantine Wasonga, has stated that it is unrealistic to declare an education person, someone who is paid to think, as redundant.

The unions are calling for the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) to be treated like other civil servants.

They are also demanding that the government facilitate negotiations for the 2021-2025 CBA as early as possible so that it can be factored into the budgetary estimations for 2023-2024.

On the issue of privatizing public universities, the academic and non-academic staff have similarly expressed their opposition.

The Secretary General of the Kenya Universities Staff Union, Charles Mukhwaya, has rejected the idea of privatizing public universities, stating that it will cripple activities in the institutions and make education more expensive and less accessible.

He is calling for the government to remove universities from the list of state corporations that are proposed for privatization.

The Trade and Investment Cabinet Secretary, Moses Kuria, recently announced that he is in talks with international investors to partner with universities and privatize some of them.

However, Wasonga has criticized the plan, stating that it will make education a reserve for the rich and will not be affordable for poor Kenyans.

He also criticized the government for prioritizing the plan, which he believes Kenyans cannot afford.
