University Students Issue 24-Hour Ultimatum Over Ongoing Lecturers’ Strike.
A section of university students has given the government an ultimatum of 24 hours to resolve the ongoing lecturers’ strike or else they will take industrial action.
The students said they have been idle and unattended in classrooms for long and that the continued disruption will affect academic calendars and examination schedules. They said they have spent most of their time in residence halls and libraries with limited access to instruction.
The lecturers’ strike is mainly over the payment of Ksh. 7.9 billion in outstanding dues from the 2017–2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and the start of negotiations for the 2025–2029 CBA.
This is similar to last year’s strike that saw the academic semester extended into the first quarter of this year.
Students have given the government an ultimatum. Desmond Mbare, a Kenyatta University student said, “If they delay the academic calendar, they shall compensate. There’s a strike of lecturers, we shall not sit back and relax while these people are delaying our dreams in this country.”
Victor Omondi, also a Kenyatta University student added, “We demand a clear public stated plan for the recovery of lost time including revised academic calendar to prevent this disruption from becoming a lost semester or delayed graduation for thousands of students.”

Valentine Nyanchama, another Kenyatta University student said, “It’s remaining one month to our exams and we are not seeing our lecturers in class. We are not going to retreat. We are here so that you can hear our voices. The government should address this issue in 24 hours; if not, we shall be on the streets.”
The students’ statement underscores the need to resolve the lecturers’ strike to ensure academic continuity and prevent further delays in completing academic programs.
