The latest global university ranking, released on May 15, saw a drop in the University of Nairobi’s (UoN) position by 20 places.

According to the Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR), UoN is now placed at 1425 globally. CWUR utilized four indicators, namely Education, Employability, Faculty, and Research rank, to evaluate and rank universities.

UoN’s performance in the employability rank was disappointing, as it secured the 1610th position globally.

This indicates that many of its graduates are facing challenges when it comes to finding employment.

On the other hand, the institution’s research hub demonstrated commendable performance and achieved a rank of 1365 worldwide.

At the national level, UoN was the only Kenyan university that made it into the top 2000 academic institutions globally.

Among the 20,531 institutions surveyed by CWUR, 47 Kenyan universities failed to secure a spot in the top 2000.

In East Africa, UoN stood second, with Makerere University from Uganda leading the way at the 950th position globally.

Makerere surpassed UoN in both research (ranked 907) and employability (ranked 1518).

In Tanzania, the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences achieved a global ranking of 1920, with a research rank of 1843.

Unfortunately, no other university from East Africa managed to make it into the top 2000 on the global list.

When it comes to representation in the top 2000, South Africa had the highest number of universities, with 13 institutions making the cut.

The University of Cape Town led the way for South Africa at the 207th position.

Egypt showcased the most substantial presence among African countries, with 21 universities listed in the top 2000.

The University of Nairobi’s drop in the global ranking highlights the importance of focusing on employability and bridging the gap between academia and the job market.

The global ranking showcased the United States as the prominent force, with a remarkable presence of 336 universities among the top institutions worldwide.

Among the elite educational institutions worldwide, the top ten comprised Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University, University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, Princeton University, University of Chicago, Columbia University, University of Pennsylvania, and Yale University.

As UoN Falls by 20 places in the University Ranking, it serves as a reminder for institutions to continuously enhance their curriculum and provide students with practical skills that align with industry needs.

Additionally, efforts should be made to invest in research and innovation to improve a university’s standing on a global scale.
