University Entry Requirements Changes With New KCSE Grading System
Students awaiting admission to universities, TVET institutions, and colleges will now be subjected to new procedures in order to pursue courses of their choice, after the introduction of a new grading system by the Ministry of Education.
Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu made the remark during the publication of the 2023 KCSE results in Eldoret on Monday, saying that admittance conditions for students have altered to allow more students to study courses of their choosing.

“This is the first KCSE examination results to be released under a new grading structure that was implemented in the 2023 KCSE examination, breaking with tradition.” “The Council approved the revised grading system in accordance with Council Resolution No. 2/C 18th September/ 2023/1,” Machogu stated.
The overall grade of KCSE results under the system has taken into account Mathematics, the top performing language subject among English/Kiswahili/Kenyan Sign Language and the best performing five disciplines.
Ezekiel Machogu stated that the new reform measure would enable a greater number of students to pursue courses of their choice at universities, diploma and TVET training at certificate and artisan levels than before when the grading was more restrictive.
The CS stated that the measure is intended to ensure that candidates have mandatory literacy (English or Kiswahili) and numeracy (mathematics) abilities in order to pursue professions in TVET institutions, universities, and colleges.

To avoid disadvantage, Machogu urged the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) and universities to align their 15 cluster points and entry standards with the new changes.
Furthermore, Machogu instructed KUCCPS to initiate a comprehensive career awareness campaign targeting the 2023 KCSE candidates, ensuring that all students comprehend the updated entry requirements for TVET and universities under the Higher Education Funding Model launched last year.
Candidates for TVET colleges who took the KCSE in 2023 will be admitted in March 2024.
