Unions Accuse TSC of Neglecting Teacher Promotions as Educators Shun Advertised School Head Positions
Teachers’ representatives who have been at the vanguard of advocating for tutors’ advancement blame the TSC for its current predicament.
Teachers have been avoiding administrative positions despite multiple advertisements since December last year.
Akelo Misori, secretary general of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), accused TSC of neglecting to promote teachers progressively.
According to Misori, teachers have remained in the same job group for several years without advancing to the next level.
This situation according to KUPPET is a demoralizing factor for teachers who want to advance.
He specifically points out that the TSC has not implemented the progressive promotion as stipulated in the 2016-2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
Collins Oyuu, secretary general of the Kenya Union of Teachers (Knut), stated that teachers’ qualifications are constrained by the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
Oyuu observed that some teachers have been acting for a number of years and cannot assume higher-level positions due to their lack of credentials.
‘‘TSC just picked them to act as deputy heads without looking at their lower qualifications. Some cannot apply without having the lowest grades. You only have to apply when you are sure you qualify,’’ he explained.
