Uhuru Launches National Defence University-Kenya (NDU-K) for KDF Soldiers
President Uhuru Kenyatta dedicated a one-of-a-kind National Defense University in Lanet Nakuru County on Wednesday, August 3. On May 27, 2021, the college was granted a charter, granting it university status.
The institution will serve as a military training center for the region and the country as a whole. It is the only institution of its kind in not only East Africa but also Central Africa.
Cadets in the army, navy and air force will receive physical and intellectual training, according to the institution’s management. In addition, due to the growing international security threats, civilians will be trained.
Uhuru went on to praise the establishment for its role in ensuring national security and propelling the country forward. According to the university, it is in line with the national development agenda.
“The National Defence University must, continuously, align its security programs to the national development agenda,’” stated Uhuru.
The Head of State also officially launched the institution’s website alongside Vice Chancellor Lieutenant Jonah Mwangi and the Chief of Defence Forces.
Notably, Uhuru stated his intention to empower the defense security department by establishing channels and institutions that provide quality education and training.
“The establishment of the National Defence University of Kenya comes when conflict resolution requires modern measures. We will provide strategic defense and security education towards bringing up a well-grounded generation of officers with new ideas and technology,” the VC said.
The institution will also address cybercrime, terror attacks, and other geopolitical security threats. Advanced skills and technology in the security sector will be taught.
The institution already has 179 trainees pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Defence and Security Studies, according to the VC. He also stated that the institution’s teaching and management staff was made up of both military officers and civilians.
He went on to say that the institution would be geared toward specialized officers with a well-known background.
While thanking the nation for its support during his presidency, the president noted that the university was the first public institution to be established under Section 24 of the University Act of 2012.
