Uasin-Gishu Education Boss ‘Humiliated’ by Magoha Pays Tribute, Hails His Legacy
Dr. Gitonga Mbaka, a former Uasin Gishu County Director of Education, has expressed his condolences on the passing of former Cabinet Secretary (CS) Professor George Magoha, despite a publicly humiliating incident that occurred between them in 2020.
The incident, which involved Prof. Magoha insulting and publicly humiliating Dr. Mbaka during a visit to Langas Primary School in Eldoret, went viral and led to backlash from Kenyans against Prof. Magoha, with some education stakeholders calling for his resignation.
However, Dr. Mbaka has stated that he holds no grudge against the late CS and described him as a gallant leader and hero who valued the people he worked with.
Dr. Mbaka recounted the events of that fateful day, stating that all was going well during an inspection of coronavirus disease preparedness until Prof. Magoha saw some construction materials left behind by workers, which was not his fault, but as the education boss in the county, he had to bear the responsibility.
Despite the incident, Dr. Mbaka revealed that he received numerous calls from various people across the country offering him support, even as many Kenyans demanded an apology from Prof. Magoha.
Prof. Magoha, who passed away on Tuesday from a cardiac arrest, has been mourned by several leaders including former President Uhuru Kenyatta and President William Ruto.
He had a distinguished career in education, serving as the Chairman of the Kenya National Examinations Council from 2016 to 2019 and as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nairobi from 2005 to 2015.
Shortly before his death, he was appointed as Professor of Surgery at Maseno University’s School of Medicine.
