Two KCSE Candidates Disappear from Sironga Girls High School Days Before Examinations.
Its coming to light now that the authorities in Nyamira County have begun looking into the sudden vanishing of two Form Four students from Sironga Girls High School – just before the KCSE exams are due to take place in 2025.
Those who have gone missing are Herly Atieno and Ashenance Akinyi Onyango , who both went missing on the 25th October. No one knows where they are, with officials working alongside security agencies to try and find out what happened.
Apparently, the missing students were due to sit the KCSE exams this year from Sironga Girls High school in Nyamira County. There’s worry here about the security and safety of the kids in boarding schools.
Herly Atieno’s mum, Ms Noel Barasa, says she hadn’t seen her since the 17th of October – but that was when she took her daughter back to school. Ms Barasa recalls that at the time, Herly looked fine and sounded hopeful about doing well in the up and coming exams.
She said the school rang her on the morning of the 25th of October to say that they’d not been able to find Herly in the school. “The teacher rang up to ask if I’d brought her daughter home” she said.
Ms Barasa added that she’d actually spoken to Herly just 3 days prior to that, and that she had been in good spirits then. She said she had also sent some pocket money to Herly the day before the disappearance.
But it seems the school has been pretty tight lipped about what happened to Herly since then. “I haven’t got any proper information about what’s going on. How can these places be safe for the kids when the teachers cant even keep track of them?” she said, clearly not happy with how the situation has been handled.
The second missing student is Ashenance Akinyi Onyango, who is also in the same Form and was also going to have sat the KCSE exams from the school. Her dad, Mr Eric Onyango, says the school rang him up to say that they couldn’t find her on the evening of the 25th of October.
“All along I thought she was in the school getting ready for the exams – I had no idea she was gone”, he said in shock.
Both families say the two girls were close friends and were in the same class. They also say that the girls had been in a bit of trouble earlier on in the term, when 37 students including themselves had been suspended from the school for having mobile phones.
The last time he spoke to her, Herly had asked if he had forgiven her for the suspension – and he said he’d forgiven her.
The parents have since questioned the school’s security measures, citing the presence of watchmen and closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras that should have helped in the surveillance.
“The school is not doing enough to find our children. Most of the education officers we have reached out to also say there’s nothing they can do, since the matter is with the police,” Ms Barasa said.
Mr Onyango added that he has tried to reach his daughter through her social media accounts, including Instagram, but failed.
When contacted, Sironga Girls High School Principal, Ms Jane Nyanumba said the school would comment after the national exams.

“The police are handling the case. I will comment after the exams,” Ms Nyanumba said.
As of now, the case is still under investigation by the police and both families are waiting for official communication on the progress.
