At least 300 teachers from Technical and Vocational Educational Institutions will be trained in software development.
The Ministry of Education and Google will collaborate to create an Android Developer Skills master plan for use in TVETs.
CS Education On Monday, George Magoha oversaw the initiative’s launch at the Kenya Technical Training College. According to Magoha, this collaboration will allow the sector to grow while also providing opportunities for the youth.
“Collaborations between governments and tech companies can drive digital transformation by growing the tech talent pipeline,” Magoha said.
The initiative will last six months and will teach 10,000 students from 50 different institutions intermediate-level skills in the development of Android applications.
Magoha went on to say that communities across Kenya help to grow the developer ecosystem and foster creativity and entrepreneurship.
“Opening up a pathway for developer training through the TVET establishment has the potential to accelerate this growth, create new jobs and drive even greater innovation,” he said.
Charles Murito, Google’s Director of Government Affairs and Public Policy for Sub-Saharan Africa, stated that the collaboration has the potential to elevate Kenya’s position as a leading tech start-up and innovation destination in Africa.

The Software Developer Hub will be KTTC, with each participating TVET creating student developer clubs. Kenya has 116 TVET institutions under the Ministry of Education and 130 under other line ministries.
This includes over 800 vocational training centers managed by county governments as well as over 700 private institutions across the country.

In 2021, TVETs admitted 137,072 students, while universities admitted 134,690. Kenya has 60,000 professional developers, accounting for 9% of the total in Africa.
This comes as the government plans to hire 3,000 trainers this year to meet the high demand for TVET tutors.
The government implemented reforms in the TVET sector to shift training from supply-based to demand-based.
