TVET Trainers Retooled to Enhance Implementation of CBET
Principal Secretary State Department for Technical, Vocational Education and Training, Dr. Esther Thaara Muoria, has expressed optimism that the ongoing retooling of TVET trainers by the Kenya School of TVET will facilitate the implementation of competency-based education training (CBET) in TVET institutions.
During the TVET Principals, Council, and Board Chair’s consultative meeting held at the Kenya School of TVET, PS Muoria stated that 924 TVET trainers from national polytechnics have been retrained, and another batch of 580 TVET trainers are currently undergoing retraining in different regions of the country.
PS Muoria exuded confidence that the retooling of TVET trainers across the nation is opportune and will enhance the implementation of CBET in TVET institutions in Kenya.

“In order for CBET delivery to be effective, trainers must be equipped with the appropriate skills and competencies,” said Muoria, adding that the implementation of CBET in Kenya is a presidential directive.
Dr. Muoria urged all TVET agencies — TVET CDACC, TVETA, KNQA, and Kenya School of TVET — and all stakeholders in the TVET subsector to facilitate the implementation of a CBET curriculum in Kenya.
The PS emphasized the urgent necessity of ensuring that TVET trainers acquire the requisite practical skills.
She stressed that this plays a pivotal role in the successful implementation of CBET since it provides trainers with opportunities for retraining on the use of cutting-edge equipment.
The PS noted that the State Department for TVET will shortly implement a robust program to train trainers on the use of training equipment.
The partnership between SDTVET and its development partners will result in the upskilling of TVET instructors in the use of cutting-edge apparatus.

On the implementation of the Affordable Housing Programme (AHP) and County Aggregation Industrial Parks (CAIPS), SDTVET has collaborated with the state departments responsible for Housing and Urban Development, Industrialization, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
Dr. Muoria noted that this partnership would function as a training ground for TVET trainees and an RPL assessment center for Micro, Small, and Medium-Sized Enterprises (MSMEs).
The PS also stated that industry ties are crucial to the successful implementation of CBET in Kenya and urged TVET directors to form partnerships with various industries in order to facilitate the successful implementation of CBET.
She added that numerous government initiatives will serve as a massive training ground for TVET instructors.
Twenty-four principals, councillors, and board chairmen from the National Polytechnics participated in the consultation held at the Kenya School of TVET.
