In order to improve economic growth and labor market conditions, the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA) is focusing on strengthening TVET skill development programs through the creation of skill competitions.

Prof. Hubert Gijzen, Regional Director of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), stated that Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) skills such as career guidance, counseling, communication strategies, and skills competitions will aid in improving society perception of TVET among young people, enterprises, and society, thereby playing a significant role in job creation.

Prof. Gijzen stated yesterday at a Nairobi hotel during the WorldSkills Africa Competition report presentation on Kenya’s inaugural participation in the WorldSkills Africa Competition in Namibia that skills development taught in TVET institutions is critical because it will attract creativity and innovation among the youth.

He went on to say that the Better Education for Africa’s Rise (BEAR) initiative, which aims to strengthen TVET programs for skill development and job creation, is also focusing on digitization, environmental technologies, and solar photovoltaic.

Gijzen said, “I am delighted that the BEAR partnership in Kenya has been collaborating with the TVET Authority and other government and private partners with a focus on current technological skills that are needed for Africa’s successful green transformation.”

BEAR is a collaborative initiative of UNESCO, the Republic of Korea, and the governments of Kenya, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Tanzania, and Uganda to strengthen TVET programs for skill development and job creation.

He also announced that UNESCO will increase its efforts to address youth unemployment through new Regional Flagship Programs on ‘Green Skills for Green Jobs.’

TVETA Board Chairperson Prof. Florence Indede stated at the event that TVET stakeholders will continue to acquire a skilled workforce that will promote the industrial revolution and urged stakeholders to organize competitions to motivate young people across the country.

“There is need to facilitate and organize regional competitions and national skills competition to enhance TVET access to many young people across the country,” she stated.

Indede stated that the competition will aid in the selection of participants for continental and global competitions, as well as the mobilization of resources to ensure that the skills competition is a vibrant endeavor that attracts a large number of youths to TVET.

She praised those who took part in the WorldSkills Competition in Namibia and were chosen by partners such as UNESCO, Boma International Hospital College, Kiambu Institute of Science and Technology, and the National Polytechnic for their contributions to the WorldSkills Competitions.
